Avoiding The Gas Leak Disaster
In the U.S. alone, there are an average of about 4,000 Methane leaks and explosions every year and millions more around the world. Natural gas is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and highly explosive.
Methane leaks and explosions cost a lot of money, in terms of property damage, lost workforce productivity, insurance claims, lawsuits, and other expenses.
If there’s one thing you don’t want in your home, it’s gas leaks or explosions. But how can you tell if Methane is leaking if you can’t see it or smell it?
Our gas detectors give you an early warning of potential dangers and gives you time to act before it’s too late. Our Gas sensors are very sensitive to Methane (natural gas) and propane. Protect Meter Natural Gas Detector and its proprietary microprocessor technology can quickly determine if natural gas is present anywhere. It’s affordable and small enough that you can have one in your home if you wish. If a leak occurs, you can be safely warned of it before any damage is done.

HOW TO USE:
– To detect leaks while minimizing false alarms, turn the sensitivity dial upward toward (+) until the device begins to alarm away from any gas leak. Turn sensitivity dial downward (-) slightly until alarm stops and 1st LED just turns off. Now, any small increase of gas level (as from a leak!) will cause the alarm to sound.
-If alarm sounds prematurely, sensitivity needs to be decreased to prevent false alarms.
– Each leak varies in leak rate and background gas concentration, so adjust sensitivity level to find any leak.
– Allow device to warm up sensor for 10s until yellow “Warm Up” light turns off.

I purchased a gas leak detector from Home Depot and it didn't go off when I held it to the light switch. The tricky part was that we didn't get the smell all the time. Sometimes we'd go a week before smelling it again. I then ordered this detector and it immediately was set off when I placed it near the light switches on the wall. I immediately called the plumbing company who had done the original work and the coupling that had originally been used was leaking. They tightened it to the point where there was no leak and the gas detector no longer was going off.
This time though, they had to do a permanent repair to the pipe so that this didn't happen again which involved cutting the drywall from floor to ceiling.

Frankly, I was skeptical that a $30 sensor was going to be any good. And I also figured that the reviews were all fake, or that people were getting something for free for posting good reviews. There is nothing at all in this package enticing me with something to give a good review. If there was, I would automatically give 1 star.
This thing is awesome. The frequency of the tone increases the closer you get, or the greater the concentration. It seems to work just as well as the one my hvac guy had, which he paid like $400 for.
But, the thing that makes it all worth it... It detects farts. So, when I ask my wife if she farted and says no, I can put it near her butt or the chair and it goes off. It's glorious.
I tested using a bic lighter, seemed to detect the gas ok.
At the cooker, nothing was detected at burner, or under cooker and I could not smell anything, I assume since it had been off for few days. So I turned back on and immediately the device began to squeal, but only while held to close to the same burner that I thought I could smell gas. That would seem pretty conclusive, checked under top (we hav large space under it), and it only squealed at the join where it was connected to cooker itself, not the wall.
So al in all, very pleased and confident that it works.
...a caveat, however. I noticed also squealed when I breathed on it, or held close to water. I believe this device is detecting ANY gas, even water vapor, not just combustable. Not marking down for it as it still did the job I purchased it for, just interesting note.
Frequently Asked Questions
This gas detector very easy to use and it works precisely. It tells you if there is a leak.
No. 3 x AAA 1.5V batteries need to be purchased separately.
The device will need around 10 seconds before you can start detecting gases.
If the burner (the knob) is turned on, yes because gas is coming out. If the burner is off, then no.
Yes, probe gas: Methane, natural gas, gas, propane, gasoline, ethanol, gas fuel, etc.
No. Only probe gas: Methane, natural gas, gas, propane, gasoline, ethanol, gas fuel, etc.
The sensor inside is mainly sensitive to Propane and Methane, the two components of LPG. The answer is yes, it can.
No! CO2 is not combustible.
Gas Sensitivity (adjustable): As low as 5ppm
It does not distinguish between different combustible gases, It only can find the location of a gas leak.
Yes, only if the septic gas consists of propane, butane, or methane.
The nature gas leak detector has a low power prompt function. The new battery can use 10-12 hours
Yes… the stronger the saturation the more lights and beeps.

Yes, someone actually asked us! So here is your answer: According to google’s result, farts are made of 59% nitrogen, 21% hydrogen, 9% carbon dioxide, 7% methane, 3% oxygen, and 1% others. So if farts are strong and lasting enough, this device can detect it!
This device is powered by 3 x AAA 1.5V batteries (not included)
It’s designed to detect gas leaks from a small location; We don’t see an issue with the basement; assuming you are tracing a gas line to see if there is a leak anywhere along with it. It is not going to detect a leak from “somewhere” in the basement just by sitting on a table for example.

1) Easy to understand video will be good choice, refer to “How and where to use the Y201 gas leak detector” around pictures area at beginning .
2) Get service support, engineers on staff from factory online will help to answer any questions related to leakage if above video can’t help to understand.
The design of ticking sound has two purposes:
1) Indicates the device is working. For some cases, we need to extend the probe to the area that we can’t see LED lights, customers could judge thru the sound changes. The green power LED light is also used to indicate the device is working.
2) Represent different levels of gas leakage. Low frequency (around 2~3 times/s) means warm-up period or no leakage, if changed into high frequency (around 6~7 times/s) during detection process, means encounter leakage issue.
Notes: above is based on we set sensitivity well, because if we rotate the knob at anti-clockside too much, even there don’t have any leakage, all the 6 LED will be triggered on and sound will become piecing high frequency.
According to our experiment data at lab for different batteries brand, usually last from 15 minutes to 4 hours. Different brand batteries have very different quality. Indeed, the device is hungry for batteries. The sensor in the probe needs large power for micro burning process and we can feel a little warm if we use finger to hold the probe. Another reason maybe product itself, components (resistor, capacitor……) tolerance or damage on the PCB board may also lead to large power consumption, but the rate is very low.
Usually when we find customers from home inspection company, we will suggest purchasing rechargeable Li-batteries, because their technicians or plumbers use the device frequently and Li-batteries will help to save some batteries cost.
Don’t worry, it’s normal, the large moisture change and CO affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm by 1~2 LED red bars, but only last for 1~3s (very short time) if we move probe away. If we encounter leakage along the pipeline or connectors, all 5~6 LED bars will be triggered on at one moment, light and piercing sound alarm will last at least for 6~8s.
Recommend 1~10cm, if too far, concentration will become smaller as distance increase from leak point, and maybe not enough find and locate tiny leakage.
Bubble is very good way and can be used to check all kinds of gas leakage while Y201 is mainly used for combustible gas. But for very tiny leakage and very strong leakage, bubble method maybe not good enough:
1) too tiny leak can’t blow up bubble, too strong will blow the liquid away and can’t have bubble,
2) some areas we can’t extend to apply bubble liquid,
3) need good luck and skills to control the bubble liquid concentration if DIY bubble liquid,
4) in some case, liquid contact may lead to equipment or device damage.
The best way is: use both methods for double confirm if allowed, since bubble is more visible.

We also discovered a double sink kitchen drain trap installation that sometimes allows some gas to escape and modified it.
This detector saved us having to call in a plumber and diagnosis the problems accurately and precisely.
What we learned is a human nose is not a very good diagnostic tool!
I found this device that got rave reviews and figured I would give it a try. It came with a nice pouch and simple enough directions on how to use it. I went outside and fired it up. You have to adjust the sensitivity first as it always acts like the air itself it full of gas initially until you get it down to having the red lights turn off. So after a minute of turning the device on, it is good to go when the device light says so. I decided to check the valve area by my water heater where the leak had occurred when we moved in. At first nothing. Then I got around to one specific side of the valve and this thing lit up like a Christmas tree. I slowly moved it around and it would go away slowly. I pulled it out to clear the sensor and would check around that area again, but once I got to one specific spot it lit up again. So apparently, the guy who "fixed" the leak just tightened the value more and more to "eliminate" the leak but he cracked the valve. I called out my plumber to fix the issue. He didn't have a handheld device like I did, but used the soap and water test to find the leak and there it was where the device has detected everything. He replaced the valve and checked for no leaks. I decided to check using my device and found that the connector of the pipe had apparently been fractured as well when he put the new one on and we couldn't detect that leak due to the huge leak on the valve. So luckily my detector helped him fix that issue as well. The plumber was so impressed with the device that he asked me where I got it as he would buy one for himself. I also used this device to check the other areas of the house that had leaks and anywhere else with gas, but luckily nothing else popped up. Highly recommend this device for accurate readings and to detect natural gas. It could help save your life if the leaks are in your house!
When the sensitivity is properly adjusted this appears to work quite well. Tested it with an LP torch to verify that it is detecting.
I saw a video where someone was saying that it gave a false indication when sniffing Oatley leak detector fluid.
I suspect the reason is that the Oatley product is flammable if you look at the data details and contains Ethylene Glycol, so it is not just a soapy solution.
The SDS document lists Fire-fighting measures, and lots of cautions on working with the Oatley solution.
So I believe that the detector was picking up the off gassing of the Ethylene Glycol. So in the sense that it isn't LP gas that would be a false indication, but the detector also reacts to a variety of combustible gases.
So in that sense it is not giving a false indication since the Ethylene Glycol is combustible per the SDS from Oatley.
(I guess I need to search amazon for a new nose for my face.)
First used it to check all the propane fittings on my RV, and found a tiny leak on one of the stoves’ burner valve stem. Would never have smelled it, even up close. Luckily this sniffer did a better job than the old nose. I have several propane appliances in my house, checking them next. This unit is well worth the price for peace of mind and safety for the home & RV. Already paid for itself.

Turned it on, it takes a few seconds to warm up / calibrate?
Took the meter outside and set the adjustment to just at the point of detecting, just before it starts emitting it sound.
Then went inside and pointed it in to areas we suspected were emanating the smell, found the source.
Only gave it a 4 star on accuracy because we have no way to know how well it is calibrated and if the differentiations are correct. We would need a master of some type to check this to.
Yeah its worth the money, even if you use it once.

I am so glad that i bought it and fixed the leak myself than calling the gas company and a plumber. saved $$$ and also didn't have to let a stranger in the house during a pandemic
When I went up in the attic to do some electrical work, I could smell a faint gas smell, but I just couldn't pin point where the leak was. Tried the bubbling solution trick with no luck. I bought this and was immediately able locate the leak at the valve joint threads. Once the leak was located with the leak detector, I was able to confirm it with the bubbling solution also, but the leak was so small, randomly pouring the solution alone wasn't helping
hope this helps
If you want a job done sometimes you have to do it yourself!
I ordered the Y201 from Amazon. Got in a couple days. Read the instructions and went to the RV storage. Could still smell the faint propane smell. Turned the Y201 on and set it to a sensitive setting. As SOON as I moved the sensor wand to the propane tank hose it went off like the 4th of July. The crimped hose connection at the tank end nut was leaking. Checked every other connection and it was negative. I replaced both propane tank hoses and no more smell. Propane smell problem solved.
Now I make a habit of checking propane tank connection each time I fill them. The Y201 works great and is relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of the lost propane at the current price. Cheap price to pay to protect your RV and more importantly your family. Buy it you’ll like it!

It is very easy to use. What is especially important in that it can detect the exact location of a leak when there is gas in the area.
This is accomplished by adjusting the sensitivity according to the instructions. This sounds complicated, but it is not. Just turn it on, wait (for about 10 seconds) until the preheat LED turns off). Then adjust the sensitivity control (a knob on the side), until the LED's and Buzzer just barely turns off. In other words, advance the sensitivity until the LED's and buzzer sound, then carefully (and slowly) reduce the sensitivity until the LED's and buzzer turn off.
This calibration process takes into consideration the background level of gas. Thus, even where there is some gas in the environment, it is still very easy to determine the exact location of the leak.
I found this seller to be very helpful. They just sent me an email with an updated version of their instruction manual! This is great service. And this dealer provides a lifetime warranty on the product.
Sure enough there is a large gas leak in this house and I'm sure it's been like this the last 12 years. I really wonder how much money I could have saved over the 12 years of having this gas leak. For a 20 dollar item it's a must have if you even think you have a gas leak.
If you think you have a gas leak just get one of these. The item clearly works because you can watch the meter drop in intensity as you walk away from the leak. This could save you some serious cash over the long run not to mention safety as well.
Near the end of our remodeling construction...More
Near the end of our remodeling construction project we started to smell "a smell"... like, a very bad smell. But it was intermittent and hard to pinpoint even what room it was coming from. It sometimes seemed bad in the closet where we have a basement sewer ejector pit/pump, it was also pretty bad in the bathroom near the sink. We had our contractor re-seal every visible joint in the sewer drain pipes and vent pipes, tore open "new" drywall walls (that had just been finished and painted), as well as fill all empty spaces with expandable foam, but still... the smell was still there, and we couldn't move our family into the new bedrooms while we kept smelling "the smell" in the hall, closet and bathroom. I was distraught that we were never going to find the source and we wouldn't be able to move into our "newly" renovated home (after a crazy-long construction time). I was desperate. Finally, while watching YouTube videos about how to use smoke bombs to find sewer vent leaks, I saw an expert mention a gas detection device and said it cost a couple hundred dollars, but I found this one for way less and with good reviews, I gave it a shot.
When it arrived, I put the batteries in and the device immediately started making a scary noise and I thought it was broken, but I eventually figured out I just needed to lower the sensitivity dial. Once I figured out how to calibrate it, I took it down to the area where the smell seemed worst and the sensor IMMEDIATELY went off. Set it to "more" sensitive and was able to pinpoint the hidden area closer. We broke open more of the drywall closer to where the sensor was pointing us too, and OMG! Hidden behind the drywall that we hadn't opened up, there was a huge saw-made gash in the sewer drain vent pipe that had been accidentally (and without anyone's knowledge) made by the stair installer and then covered over by the drywall installer, so sewer gas had been escaping into the wall cavities and then leaking into the rooms through any seams/openings. This sensor device saved the day! I can't recommend it enough.
Prior to opening the tanks I did the taring adjustment on the detector. I then sniffed the new hoses and switcher/regulator and got no warning, as expected. Next, I opened the propane tanks and repeated the inspection, and much to my relief got no warning. Then, to ensure the detector was working, I turned the propane to my stove on low (without lighting it) and sniffed that with the detector, which immediately showed all bars lit up with loud beeping to accompany it.
Now I feel confident my install is leak free.
Used the device again as a precaution after the repair and low and behold, detected a slightly larger fizzer in another area that was taken apart and reattached from the earlier fix. Used soapy bubble test and was able to point out the exact location when another mechanic came in to fix that.
This second repair led to the discovery that there was a faulty issue with the gas valve that was causing dangerously high levels of CO in the exhaust chute.
Definitely an accurate detector, not to be dismissed because of its relatively low cost compared to industrial and professional grade equipment. Just make sure to start it up and calibrate in a separate area from the cause of concern and set the meter to the first red light just before it starts to make the buzzing noise.
On a side note, if you blow into it or touch with hands/skin it sets off the detector so make sure you're not breathing right next to it when using it for up close inspections. Would recommend recording a video of your findings too as a backup in case it's a super small leak (still dangerous and needs to be fixed) that the mechanic might not discover when inspecting, and also be sure to check other parts of the gas piping and furnace too for extra precaution, even if this meter didn't go off in those other areas!
It is a great detector. It was very sensitive and the instructions were a blessing in making sure I was dialing it in and adjusting the sensitivity properly. It was reasonably price and offers great peace of mind. I tested it on other propane appliances in my home to get a feel for its operation and as a comparison to my new appliance. I have complete confidence in my installation as a result of its use and the peace of mind I have as a result of this detector makes it a valuable addition to my tools.
Thanks for the great product and great lifetime warranty. I definitely would recommend this detector.
The biggest difficulty was convincing the gas professionals that it was their detection methods that were inadequate or faulty, not mine!
Be sure the set the sensitivity correctly, as shown in one of the videos for this product, as it is the key to this product's sensitivity.
This is a definite tool everyone should have in their toolbox. Unit is also simple to use.
Also, it comes with a storage pouch which is nice.
Side note it does take a little bit to warm up, and if you fart on it before hand, it'll read level 5 non-stop. So make sure to let it calibrate , THEN fart.
After researching the Protect Meter natural gas leak detector, I purchased it and started testing my natural gas connections. The Protect Meter detector found a very small gas leak in the flex line that connected my gas range. I replaced the line with a new one and now test my connections more often than before. This is a great product and well worth the investment!
I bought a Protect Meter product. It detects gas leaks and can really save your house in case of fire. I highly recommend it. It’s very helpful in many ways.
Received the Protect Meter. In less than five minutes, it located a gas leak. Just replaced the flex line and no more gas smell. It was well made and easy to use.
The Protect Meter is a propane detector that works really well, and it’s extremely durable. I bought one to see if our RV propane detectors were working correctly. I found out that one of the RV’s propane detectors was defective, but the other one was fine. I’ve done the job before with soapy water but that sometimes confirms there are no leaks and then I get the surprise of my life with a burst pipe. Protect Meter is a product I’d recommend to avoid problems.
This is a very effective gas detector. The probe is really useful when gas detection is need for tricky places. The LEDs helps to identify the gas concentration very easily . High sensitivity is important in gas detection . AAA batteries are convenient for this type of a gas detector.
